URFIT - Breathe it...Live it...Be it!
Presented by URFIT – Breathe it…Live it…Be it! ECHO Excellence was designed specifically for teenagers
who are struggling with maintaining a healthy weight and living a healthy lifestyle.
This public health program was written by Ralyn Strong and Melinda Peterson. ECHO (Every Choice Has
Outcomes) covers the three main aspects of healthy living; Physical, Nutritional and Emotional. The twelve
session program will give students the tools to make positive changes in their life and then challenge them to
incorporate this information into their lives, while encouraging and educating their friends and family.
The fun-filled, interactive lessons give participants the tools and motivation to make positive changes in their
life. Our first goal is to educate about the aspects of living a healthy lifestyle. As participants are armed with
knowledge, they are guided to implement this knowledge into their daily lives.
We will be exploring the issues of being overweight. What does it mean, how does it feel, why it happens and
what we can do to change it.
Topics and activities include information about serving sizes, appropriate amounts of exercise, healthy options
when eating out, showing how food is used in the body, body image, difference between appetite and hunger
and how every choice we make has an affect on our body.
This is an integrative program. Lessons include activities that will challenge the students to explore their own
choices related to health.
“Our echoes roll from soul to soul and grow forever and forever.” Tennyson
In 5th grade kids would make fat jokes towards me or pinch my stomach. It didnt really bother me that much until I went to middle school. I
didnt know anyone and yet they seemed comfortable enough to make remarks about my weight. That year I gained so much weight. I wasn't a
cute pudgy anymore. I was classified as obese by my doctor.
My obseity continued through middle school. I was teased constantly and badgered by my parents about what I ate. So, I became a closet eater
and binged even more. All my clothes stopped fitting me and I started having to shop at the plus size section. I was mortified when someone I
knew saw me shopping there. In 8th grade I was 5'5 and 207lbs and a size 20.
I have lost 52 pounds since 8th grade and I don't have to wear XL sizes anymore. It is a great feeling of accomplishment when you have reached
a weight for which you are comfortable with. I gained so much confidence with my new weight. I dont feel awkward sticking out of the crowd
or wearing ridiculous outfits that would catch anyone's attention. I feel like a teenager should feel like - full of life!
