"I don't do stretching." That was the stern admonition I gave Melinda
the first day she became my Personal Trainer. What was I thinking? Don't ask. The
truth is I wasn't "thinking." I was in fact projecting the many built-up assumptions,
fears, embarrassing situations, insecurities, and lack of good, healthy information so
many of us who struggle with our weights and health habits carry around our
depleted bodies. Melinda only nodded politely and kept giving me information, tons
of it, that no matter how many academic degrees I could ever hope to have, I had
simply missed along the path. A few days later, sold on Melinda's empathic but
nononsense straight talk and achievable small goals, not only was I stretching, I was
also doing weights, increasing my cardio, watching my eating, and enjoying a newly
discovered level of energy and general sense of wellbeing. Like so many other women
who reach certain levels of accomplishment in life (be it a great job, a degree, or a
family) I had forgotten to care for my body. Melinda instinctively understood all my
defenses, gracefully pushed me to confront my limitations, and in the process helped
me make a significant change at an important moment in my life. I still have a long
way to go, but I have acquired the tools I need to keep trying.
